I'm going to be so real right now; family sessions are a delightful mix of 50% laughter and 50% chaos, and that's the absolute beauty of it!

Kids are wild and joyful little things, and that's all a part of their infectious magic.

These sessions are not about those perfect smiles or pristine poses we'll force them into — it's about capturing the laughter and the pure joy when kids are just being themselves. The giggles when your toddler decides grass tastes better than crackers or how your partner looks at you while your kids run wild.

The unfiltered moments that happen naturally are the ones you'll cherish the most for years to come -- because they're real, they're fun, and they're you.

And don't stress about outfits or stiff poses—I'm here to help take you along every step of the way, so you can focus on being in the moment with your family.

Family Photography Sessions are some of my favourites because every family is always so unique with their own personality, quirks, interests, and ways of life. But if you're worried about the logistics of planning it all, don't worry; this is where I come in. With so much experience from so many family sessions, there's nothing I've not experienced or not prepared for; I'm here to help with planning, choosing a location, what to wear, putting your husband and kids at ease, and just anything you need!

Next year, their smiles, giggles, and those curious little eyes will look different, and we’ll miss these exact pieces of who they are right now.

I walked away from our last session feeling a little anxious, thinking about how squirmy the boys were and wondering if we’d managed to get a single photo of us all looking at the camera. But then I remembered what I tell every family I work with: we’re capturing this season of life just as it is, in all its joyful chaos. When we let go and embrace the play, we get images that show their true personalities. As a mom, I know how fast time passes, and freezing these moments is such a blessing!

Hey, I'm Amerlia!

Will we get one good shot? Are the kids smiling? Am I smiling? Am I smiling too much? How does my hair look? Is someone’s diaper showing? Is it too cold? Are the kids going to cry? Honestly, the list goes on and on!

It’s always humbling getting our own family photos taken, and yep, we do this probably 3-4 times a year! It’s such a good reminder of the STRUGGLE that goes into this process—picking out outfits for everyone, coordinating naps for the little ones, and then the million thoughts running through my head during the session itself.

The best part about being a legacy photographer is that when kids know me as more than just "the person with the camera," they let their guard down, show off their cheeky smiles, and even come up with their own photo ideas. Who doesn't want a superhero pose?!

Building real connections with your family over time is one of the best parts of being a legacy photographer. As I capture your family through milestones and years, I watch your little ones grow and let their personalities shine in each session. That familiarity turns every session into a playful, relaxed adventure where I can capture moments that truly reflect who they are.

What Should I Look for in a Family Photographer in Minnesota?

There are many great tips for finding the perfect Minnesota family photographer, such as style, budget, etc. But my biggest tip would be someone who’s experienced with children; being a mum myself, I know the chaos that can come from simple tasks with children, and I also know how special those moments are. My other recommendation is to find a photographer who can both 1: give direction so if you’re feeling a bit anxious and not sure what to do, they can guide you and put you at ease while also 2: letting things unfold naturally, knowing when to step back and capture real moments and let your kids lead. Finding someone who intuitively knows how to do both will make your session the best.

What Should We Wear for Family Photos?

Neutral and coordinated outfits are recommended to keep the focus on your family. Think of simple, complementary colours without bold patterns or logos that may distract and not look great on camera. I will give you all the tips and recommendations for outfits and styles when we plan your session, so feel free to get in touch for more information!

How Long will my Family Photo Session Be?

These sessions usually last 1.5 - 2.5 hours, depending on location and activities you want to include. Feel free to reach out for more information on what my package’s look like and the time that's included in each session.

What Is the Best Time of Year for Family Photos in Minnesota?

Honestly, any time of the year is great for capturing your family's memories in the Minnesota area. It all just depends on your family and the vibe you want to create in your session. Even cold / rainy autumn days can be so gorgeous. Capturing you all in your hats and cuddling up; what I love about these types of sessions is the ability to make them entirely your own. And even more than that, you can have multiple sessions at different times of the year to have completely different photos next time.

Can Siblings / Parents Be Included in the Pictures?

Absolutely! It’s just as important to capture brothers and sisters in the pictures, too. When you inquire, let me know so I can help support you with your vision and what you need.

What Happens if the Weather Doesn’t Cooperate?

While Minnesota weather can be unpredictable, as an experienced photographer, I'm always prepared. I'm familiar with the area, so I know the best spots for cover. Sometimes, embracing the unexpected weather can add a spontaneous element to your photo shoot that you didn't expect, which I'll guide you through if you want to do so. Although we do plan sessions, I always think it's important to embrace change and anything unexpected, so sometimes they make the best moments. We'll definitely be ready for whatever the weather or the session brings.

How long does it take for us to get our images?

The typical turnaround time is about 4-6 weeks for the final gallery of edited images, which you'll be able to view and download from my online gallery.

Can Pets Be Included in Our Family Photos?

OMG Heck yes!!! Pets can absolutely be part of the session! Fur babies are, of course, part of the family, so they are more than welcome—in fact, they are very much encouraged!
